Jarapa: waste converted into treasure

Unisa in its on-going search for new sustainable materials found Pedro, an artisan who learnt a trade from his father, based on recycling, which dates back to the Moorish times.

Pedro has a jarapa loom, designed by means of an ancestral technique, which uses the fabric remnants of the manufacturing processes such as clothing or upholstery, to create yarn, which is then used to be braided in his traditional shuttle loom.

The key point about this technique is the REUSE OF FABRIC, because the most is made out of everything that is useless, to produce new fabrics based on “rags”. In this process, the hands of Pedro and his looms have a fundamental role, turning a product that appears to be of no use into real treasures of craftsmanship, called jarapas.

We have turned this very unique fabric that is deeply rooted in the Mediterranean basin into lovely espadrilles and bags.

Let yourself be charmed by the bright cheerful colours of our espadrilles and bags, while you contribute to a more sustainable planet and the survival of the small Spanish artisan workshops.
